The Problem Is That Everyone Speaks English
Dutch is one of the easiest languages for an English speaker on paper — closely related, familiar grammar, considerable shared vocabulary. In practice learners stall more often than in harder languages, for one reason: the moment you hesitate, the Dutch person switches to English.
That makes immersion unusually hard to come by in the Netherlands, and a paid tutor unusually valuable. A tutor will not switch. That is the whole proposition.
Professional Teacher or Community Tutor?
Community tutors make particular sense for Dutch. What most learners need is someone who will hold a conversation in Dutch and not give up, which is exactly what a native speaker offering conversation practice provides — at a lower rate than formal instruction.
Professional teachers are the better choice if you are working toward inburgering or NT2, where the examination format matters.
Integration and NT2
The inburgering examination is required for many residence permits and for naturalisation, and NT2 is the standard qualification for study or professional work. Requirements and levels change, so confirm the current standard for your route with the relevant Dutch authority before setting a target.
Netherlands or Belgium?
Dutch and Flemish are the same language with differences of accent, vocabulary and formality. Speakers understand each other easily, but if you are moving to Antwerp rather than Amsterdam it is worth filtering for a Flemish tutor.
