Ukrainian Is Not a Dialect of Russian
They are separate East Slavic languages with their own grammar, vocabulary and literary traditions. Ukrainian shares more vocabulary with Polish than many people expect, and uses a Cyrillic alphabet with several letters Russian does not have.
If you already speak Russian you have a real head start on structure — cases, aspect, similar sentence patterns — but the vocabulary differences are substantial enough that comprehension does not transfer as smoothly as people assume.
Professional Teacher or Community Tutor?
Community tutors carry particular weight here. Many learners come to Ukrainian in order to communicate with actual Ukrainians — hosts, colleagues, neighbours — and conversational ability with a native speaker matters far more than grammar drills. The lower rate also makes frequent practice affordable.
Professional teachers are the better choice if you need structure, literacy, or are transitioning from Russian and want the differences taught explicitly rather than discovered.
