The NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety is the qualification for people responsible for fire risk in a building. It covers fire science, prevention, protection and emergency planning, and it is built around carrying out a fire risk assessment properly rather than just understanding the theory behind one.
The syllabus runs to six elements, covering the management of fire safety alongside the science behind it, so that a risk assessment rests on an understanding of how fire actually behaves in a building.
Unit FSC1 is an open book, scenario-based assessment completed online. You have a 24-hour window, though NEBOSH expects around five hours of actual work, and it is graded Pass, Credit or Distinction with a provisional pass mark of 45%. Examinations run quarterly. Unit FSC2 is a practical fire risk assessment carried out in a real workplace, taking around three hours, and graded Pass or Refer; if you are referred you can improve the work and resubmit at the next assessment date. Both units must be passed, and you have five years to complete the qualification, counted from the date you passed your first successful unit. Results are normally received within 50 working days of the examination or submission. Holders are entitled to Associate Membership of IIRSM, using the letters AIIRSM.
FSC2 has to be based on a real building you can properly access and are familiar with. It is where most people struggle, and almost never because the syllabus was too hard. Decide what you are assessing before the course rather than after the exam, and if you are between roles, raise it with the Learning Partner at booking.
Typically four to five days, with tutor contact, a cohort to work alongside and a fixed structure that keeps you moving.
The same tutor-led teaching in a virtual classroom, without travel or overnight stays.
The most flexible and usually the cheapest route, and the one that asks most of your own discipline.
Classroom delivery typically runs across four to five days, with private study on top. Studied digitally you work at your own pace. You then have five years from your first successful unit to complete both, so there is no need to rush, but the FSC1 examinations run quarterly rather than on demand.
FSC1 is the theory unit, assessed by an open book scenario paper with a 24-hour completion window and a provisional pass mark of 45%. FSC2 is the practical unit, a fire risk assessment of around three hours carried out in a real building. FSC1 is graded Pass, Credit or Distinction and sets your overall grade; FSC2 is graded Pass or Refer. You need both.
It sits at SCQF Level 6 with 5 credit points, comparable to RQF Level 3 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, which is roughly A-level standard. That puts it at the same level as the General Certificate, covering different ground rather than sitting above or below it.
No. There are no formal entry requirements and the Fire Certificate can be taken on its own. Many people hold the General Certificate as well, because the two cover different ground and employers often want both.
No. Like all NEBOSH qualifications it carries no expiry date. Fire safety legislation and guidance do change, though, so keeping current through continuing professional development is worth doing even though the certificate itself remains valid.
