CAT and Genny Course in Walsall

This CAT and Genny cable avoidance course runs at the PGL Midlands training venue in Walsall, West Midlands.

Course Duration

Half a day, approximately four hours.

Delivery Method

Classroom theory combined with hands-on practical exercises, taught by instructors with real utility and construction experience. Training uses current Radiodetection CAT4+ and Genny4 equipment; Leica systems and other cable avoidance tools can be arranged on request.

Who Should Attend

Anyone responsible for tracing underground services before excavation — excavation operatives, groundworkers, supervisors and managers on construction sites, roads, industrial estates and utility works.

What You'll Learn

  • Correct location techniques and methods of detection
  • Effective use of the CAT and the Genny together
  • Utility identification and interpreting what the equipment is telling you
  • The limitations of CAT and Genny tools and how to work around them
  • Safe systems of work around buried services

Content is delivered in line with HSG47, the HSE guidance on avoiding danger from underground services.

Assessment

Practical assessment and tutor observation. If you don't pass first time you can re-attempt or take additional coaching.

Certification

A Certificate of Competence issued on successful completion.

Good to Know

Cable avoidance training is not mandated by law, but under HSG47 most construction and utility sites require proof of competence in underground service detection before you can work. Over 60,000 cable strikes are reported in Great Britain each year.
