CAT & Genny Operator Course for Safe Excavation and Utility Detection

The CAT & Genny Operator course provides essential training for anyone involved in excavation, ground-works or the identification of underground services. Delivered over approximately four hours, this course equips delegates with the knowledge and practical skills needed to safely operate a Cable Avoidance Tool (CAT) and Signal Generator (Genny) in line with HSE guidance HSG47.

Training combines classroom-based instruction with hands-on practical use of detection equipment, enabling delegates to accurately locate and trace buried utilities such as gas, water, electricity and telecommunications services. The course also covers the interpretation of utility plans, site observation techniques and safe systems of work to reduce the risk of service strikes.

Delegates will learn about the theory behind underground service detection, including CAT modes of operation, signal tracing methods, depth estimation and the limitations of equipment. The course also addresses relevant legislation, best practice guidance and the consequences of failing to properly identify buried services before excavation.

This course is suitable for operatives, supervisors and managers responsible for planning or carrying out work that may involve underground services. No prior experience is required.
