What is the CITB SSSTS Course?

The Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) is the two-day CITB Site Safety Plus course for first-line supervisors on construction sites. It gives supervisors a clear understanding of their health, safety, welfare and environmental responsibilities, and of how proactive supervision, clear communication and leadership keep a site safe. Build UK and the UK Contractors Group endorse SSSTS as the standard training for supervisors, and it is the natural step before SMSTS.

Who is the CITB SSSTS Course Suitable For?

Site supervisors, gangers, foremen and team leaders who have, or are about to take on, supervisory responsibility. A good standard of written and spoken English and a valid form of photo ID are required.

What's Included in the SSSTS Course?

Two days of live instructor-led training over Zoom, with the CITB mandatory publications supplied as eBooks: Construction site supervision (GE706) and Toolbox talks (GT700).

Delivery Method

Live online via Zoom, 08:30 to 16:30 on both days. Delegates need a laptop or PC with webcam, microphone and speakers, a stable connection and a quiet space for the whole course.

Course Content

• Health and safety management – law, CDM 2015, management systems, risk assessments and method statements, statutory inspections, accident reporting, leadership and worker engagement
• Workforce health and welfare – first aid and emergencies, hazardous substances and asbestos, dust, fumes, noise, vibration and manual handling
• Site operations and equipment – site set-up and security, fire, electricity, plant and lifting operations
• Working practices and site hazards – work at height, excavations, underground and overhead services, confined spaces and temporary works
• Environmental awareness – pollution prevention, waste and nuisance

Assessment / Examination

Each delegate prepares and delivers a toolbox talk to the group and sits a 25-question exam (22 multiple choice and three short written answers). Four safety-critical questions at the start of the paper must all be answered correctly. The GE706 publication may be used for the last ten minutes.

Certification

Successful delegates receive the CITB Site Safety Plus SSSTS certificate as a PDF, valid for five years and renewable through the one-day SSSTS Refresher before expiry.

Short online courses also help employers to demonstrate that they have fulfilled their legal duties to ensure their personnel have been adequately trained.

Once the courses have been completed, a confirmation of results can be saved or printed as evidence. This can then be kept on record as evidence of suitable training.
