What is the CITB SMSTS Refresher Course?
The two-day CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme Refresher (SMSTS-R) renews an SMSTS certificate for a further five years. It brings site managers up to date with the latest changes in health and safety law and current best practice in the construction industry, and how those changes affect the workplace.
Who is the SMSTS Refresher Course Suitable For?
Site managers who have passed the full five-day SMSTS course and hold a CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme certificate that is still in date. Evidence of passing the original course is required. If the existing certificate has already expired, the full five-day SMSTS course must be retaken instead.
What's Included in the SMSTS Refresher Course?
Two days of tutor-led training from a CITB-accredited provider, assessed coursework and the end-of-course CITB examination.
Delivery Method
Classroom, starting at 8.30am, at the provider's training centre at Kingsley Place, Mote Road, Maidstone, Kent.

2 days (6 hours per day)
Course Content
- Health and safety law, the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act and health and safety policies
- Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015
- Risk assessments and method statements
- Induction and training, communication and consultation
- Site inspections and audits
- Accident prevention, control, reporting and investigation
- Management of health and welfare facilities
- Control of substances hazardous to health, dust and fumes
- Noise, vibration and manual handling
- Site organisation, fire prevention and control, electrical safety
- Temporary works
- Plant, work equipment and vehicles; lifting operations and equipment
- Work at height and confined spaces
Assessment / Examination
A multiple-choice paper at the end of day two. Coursework and participation are also assessed by the instructor.
Certification
Successful delegates receive a CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme Refresher certificate, valid for five years and renewable.
