NEBOSH qualifications sit at three broad levels. The right one depends on whether health and safety is part of your job or is your job.

About NEBOSH
What NEBOSH is
The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health is an independent awarding body founded in 1979. It sets the syllabuses and the assessments and approves the Learning Partners who deliver the training, but does not run courses itself.
That separation is what gives the qualifications their standing — the assessment is the same wherever you study, so the certificate means the same thing to every employer.
NEBOSH, IOSH or CITB?
They answer different questions. IOSH Managing Safely is a three-day course for managers who need working knowledge of risk as part of a wider role. CITB Site Safety Plus courses prove site safety competence in construction specifically.
NEBOSH is for people who want health and safety to be their profession. It is the qualification named in health and safety job adverts, and it is substantially larger than either of the others.
Do NEBOSH qualifications expire?
No. There is no expiry date and no refresher requirement on any NEBOSH qualification. Once achieved, it is held for life.
Employers and professional bodies often expect continuing professional development alongside it, particularly for practitioner roles, but that sits separately from the qualification itself.
Professional membership
NEBOSH qualifications are commonly used as the academic component for membership of professional bodies such as IOSH, with the certificate and diploma supporting different membership grades.
Membership requirements are set by the bodies themselves and change from time to time, so check current criteria with them directly before choosing a qualification on that basis.
Studying with NEBOSH
Classroom, live online or e-learning
Classroom delivery runs as a block or as day release and suits people who want tutor contact and a cohort working through the same material. Live online instructor-led keeps both and removes the travel.
Self-paced e-learning is the most flexible and usually the cheapest, but it asks for real self-discipline across the study period. The assessments and the certificate are identical whichever route you take.
The practical unit
Most NEBOSH certificates include a practical assessment carried out in a real workplace — typically a risk assessment with an action plan, submitted through the NEBOSH Assessment Platform.
This is the part people underestimate. Line up a genuine work area you have proper access to before you enrol, rather than working it out near the deadline.
Entry requirements and workload
There are no formal entry requirements at certificate level. Diplomas normally expect a relevant certificate first.
All of them are assessed in writing, so a reasonable standard of written English matters. Expect substantial private study time on top of taught hours — these are qualifications rather than short courses.
What is included in the price
Course fees and NEBOSH registration fees are usually separate, and registration is paid to NEBOSH through the Learning Partner. Resit fees are charged separately again.

Which NEBOSH course should I start with?
The National General Certificate for almost everyone. It is the entry point to the profession and the prerequisite most diplomas expect. Only start with a specialist certificate if you already work in that field and need it specifically.
Is NEBOSH recognised internationally?
Yes. NEBOSH is a UK awarding body but its qualifications are recognised worldwide, particularly across the Middle East, Asia and Africa. For roles based overseas the International General Certificate is usually the better fit, since it is assessed against international standards rather than UK legislation.
How long does a NEBOSH certificate take?
It depends on the qualification and the study route. Certificates typically involve one to two weeks of taught time plus private study and the practical assessment. Diplomas run over many months. Individual course listings give the provider's schedule.
Do I need NEBOSH or IOSH?
