NEBOSH Courses

NEBOSH qualifications are the benchmark for health and safety in the UK and in much of the world. The range runs from short awards through to Level 6 diplomas, and the right one depends on whether safety is your job or part of your job. This page sets out what each qualification is for so you can pick before you book.

Which NEBOSH qualification do you need?

Most people arrive looking for the General Certificate, and for most people that is the right answer. The rest of the range either sits above it, applies it to a sector, or covers a narrower topic in a shorter format.

Start

NEBOSH National General Certificate

The practitioner entry point and the qualification named in health and safety job adverts. Two units, no entry requirements, and it never expires. Compare General Certificate courses.

Overseas

International General Certificate

The same ground as the National, assessed against international standards rather than UK law. The right choice for roles based outside the UK. See the International General Certificate.

Sector

Construction, fire and environmental certificates

Same certificate level, applied to a specific risk. Take these alongside or instead of the General Certificate depending on where you work.

Level 6

NEBOSH National Diploma

The senior qualification, for those pursuing chartered status and practitioner roles at the top of the profession. A substantial commitment well beyond certificate level. See the National Diploma.

Shorter

Awards and topic certificates

Focused qualifications for a single subject rather than the whole discipline, useful where you need depth in one area rather than a general grounding.

Sector and specialist qualifications

Construction

Health and Safety Management for Construction applies certificate-level knowledge to construction risk. Note it is not a substitute for the CITB site cards principal contractors ask for.

Fire safety

The Certificate in Fire Safety covers fire risk assessment and management, and is commonly required of anyone responsible for fire safety in a building.

Environmental

The Environmental Management Certificate covers environmental risk, legislation and management systems for those with environmental duties.

Process safety

The HSE Certificate in Process Safety Management, developed with the Health and Safety Executive, for high-hazard process industries.

Risk assessment

The HSE Award in Managing Risks and Risk Assessment at Work is a short qualification for anyone who carries out risk assessments.

Wellbeing

Working with Wellbeing addresses mental health and wellbeing at work, an area increasingly written into client expectations.

NEBOSH is not the same as a site card

A NEBOSH qualification proves depth of health and safety knowledge. It does not get you onto a construction site. For that you need the CITB Site Safety Plus schemes such as SMSTS or SSSTS, which principal contractors require and which expire after five years, and usually a CSCS card on top. People working in construction safety commonly hold both. Our free Site Safety Plus course finder sorts out which construction course your role calls for.

Common questions

Do NEBOSH qualifications expire?

No. NEBOSH certificates and diplomas have no expiry date and no refresher requirement. Employers sometimes ask for evidence of continuing professional development alongside them for practitioner roles, but the qualification itself remains valid indefinitely. This is a real difference from CITB Site Safety Plus certificates, which lapse after five years with no grace period.

Which NEBOSH course should I start with?

The National General Certificate for almost everyone. It has no entry requirements, it is the qualification employers name when recruiting, and the sector certificates and the diploma both assume that grounding. Start elsewhere only if a specific role or client has named a specific qualification.

Is NEBOSH harder than IOSH?

Considerably, and they are not really alternatives. IOSH Managing Safely is a three-day course for managers who handle safety as part of a wider job. A NEBOSH certificate involves substantial study and written assessment, and is aimed at people whose role is health and safety itself. Managers often take IOSH; safety professionals take NEBOSH.

Is the e-learning version the same qualification?

Yes. Classroom, live online and self-paced e-learning all lead to the same NEBOSH qualification, and the assessments are identical whichever route you take. What differs is the support around you. E-learning is cheapest and most flexible, and it asks the most of your own discipline.

What does a NEBOSH Learning Partner do?

NEBOSH sets the syllabus and the assessments but does not deliver training itself. Approved Learning Partners provide the teaching and support, and are audited by NEBOSH. That is why the qualification means the same thing to an employer regardless of who you studied with, while price, format and start dates vary considerably between partners.

Do I need NEBOSH to work in construction safety?

Not to get on site. Site access is governed by CITB Site Safety Plus certificates and CSCS cards. NEBOSH is what employers look for when appointing someone to a health and safety role, and the Construction Certificate is the sector-specific version. Most construction safety professionals hold both a NEBOSH qualification and current site cards.

About NEBOSH

What NEBOSH is

The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health is an independent awarding body founded in 1979. It sets the syllabuses and the assessments and approves the Learning Partners who deliver the training, but does not run courses itself.

That separation is what gives the qualifications their standing — the assessment is the same wherever you study, so the certificate means the same thing to every employer.

NEBOSH, IOSH or CITB?

They answer different questions. IOSH Managing Safely is a three-day course for managers who need working knowledge of risk as part of a wider role. CITB Site Safety Plus courses prove site safety competence in construction specifically.

NEBOSH is for people who want health and safety to be their profession. It is the qualification named in health and safety job adverts, and it is substantially larger than either of the others.

Do NEBOSH qualifications expire?

No. There is no expiry date and no refresher requirement on any NEBOSH qualification. Once achieved, it is held for life.

Employers and professional bodies often expect continuing professional development alongside it, particularly for practitioner roles, but that sits separately from the qualification itself.

Professional membership

NEBOSH qualifications are commonly used as the academic component for membership of professional bodies such as IOSH, with the certificate and diploma supporting different membership grades.

Membership requirements are set by the bodies themselves and change from time to time, so check current criteria with them directly before choosing a qualification on that basis.

Studying with NEBOSH

Classroom, live online or e-learning

Classroom delivery runs as a block or as day release and suits people who want tutor contact and a cohort working through the same material. Live online instructor-led keeps both and removes the travel.

Self-paced e-learning is the most flexible and usually the cheapest, but it asks for real self-discipline across the study period. The assessments and the certificate are identical whichever route you take.

The practical unit

Most NEBOSH certificates include a practical assessment carried out in a real workplace — typically a risk assessment with an action plan, submitted through the NEBOSH Assessment Platform.

This is the part people underestimate. Line up a genuine work area you have proper access to before you enrol, rather than working it out near the deadline.

Entry requirements and workload

There are no formal entry requirements at certificate level. Diplomas normally expect a relevant certificate first.

All of them are assessed in writing, so a reasonable standard of written English matters. Expect substantial private study time on top of taught hours — these are qualifications rather than short courses.

What is included in the price

Course fees and NEBOSH registration fees are usually separate, and registration is paid to NEBOSH through the Learning Partner. Resit fees are charged separately again.

Check what each listing covers before comparing prices — a cheaper headline fee sometimes excludes registration. Ask the provider if it is not stated.

Common Questions

Which NEBOSH course should I start with?

The National General Certificate for almost everyone. It is the entry point to the profession and the prerequisite most diplomas expect. Only start with a specialist certificate if you already work in that field and need it specifically.

Is NEBOSH recognised internationally?

Yes. NEBOSH is a UK awarding body but its qualifications are recognised worldwide, particularly across the Middle East, Asia and Africa. For roles based overseas the International General Certificate is usually the better fit, since it is assessed against international standards rather than UK legislation.

How long does a NEBOSH certificate take?

It depends on the qualification and the study route. Certificates typically involve one to two weeks of taught time plus private study and the practical assessment. Diplomas run over many months. Individual course listings give the provider's schedule.

Do I need NEBOSH or IOSH?

IOSH Managing Safely if you manage people and need to understand risk as part of that role. NEBOSH if health and safety is becoming your job, or you are applying for health and safety positions. Many people hold both, taking IOSH first.

Can I study NEBOSH online?

Yes, both as live online instructor-led sessions and as self-paced e-learning. The qualification is identical either way. Assessments are taken through the NEBOSH Assessment Platform regardless of how you studied.

Does a NEBOSH qualification expire?

No. There is no expiry date and no refresher requirement. Employers may expect ongoing CPD, but the qualification itself is held for life.

Envico is an independent booking service, not a training provider, and is not accredited by or associated with NEBOSH. All NEBOSH courses listed here are advertised and delivered by independent NEBOSH-accredited Learning Partners.
