How self-paced e-learning works

You enrol, get login details, and work through the modules whenever it suits: an hour at lunchtime, a quiet Friday afternoon, evenings. Providers typically recommend around 20 to 25 hours in total and give you several months of access to do it in. There is no tutor teaching live, though most providers offer tutor support by email or phone when you get stuck.

The assessment is unchanged. You take the written test online once you have worked through the material, then carry out a risk assessment on your own workplace using a template provided and submit it within two weeks of finishing. That two-week clock is the part people underestimate: the study is flexible, the practical deadline is not.

Is e-learning the right format for you?

It works well if

You cannot take three consecutive days out, and never will be able to
Cost per head matters, particularly across a group of managers
You want to start now rather than wait for the next scheduled date
You are comfortable working through material without someone setting the pace

Choose another format if

You know from experience that self-study quietly slips down your list
You want to ask questions as they occur and hear other managers' examples
Your employer wants the training done by a specific date
You would benefit from a tutor challenging your risk assessment before you submit it

The completion rate is the real cost

E-learning is cheaper per head, and that is a genuine saving only if people finish. A booked classroom date gets attended because it is in the diary; a self-paced course bought in March can still be untouched in September, and the access window will expire. If you are buying for a team, set an internal deadline well inside the access period and check progress against it. Otherwise the cheaper option costs more, because you pay twice.

Yes. Classroom, live online and self-paced e-learning all lead to the same IOSH Managing Safely certificate, and the format is not shown on it. Employers and clients verify it online in exactly the same way.

How long do I get to complete it?
