How live online delivery works

You join a scheduled session over video conferencing at a set time each day, with a tutor and a group of other delegates. It is taught, not watched: you are expected to have your camera on, take part in group exercises and ask questions as you would in a room. Materials are sent digitally beforehand, the written test is taken at the end of the taught content, and the practical risk assessment is completed on your own workplace afterwards and submitted within two weeks, exactly as it is in the classroom.

Because dates are fixed, this format needs the same diary commitment as attending in person. What it removes is the travel, the overnight stay and the cost of both, which is usually where the saving comes from rather than the course fee itself.

Is live online the right format for you?

It works well if

Your team is spread across sites, regions or countries
You want tutor contact and other delegates to learn alongside
Travel and overnight costs are a bigger issue than the course fee
You need a fixed date in the diary to make the training actually happen

Choose another format if

You cannot commit to fixed dates, in which case self-paced e-learning suits better
You have poor connectivity or no quiet space to work from for three days
You are training a large group at one site, where in-house delivery may cost less
You learn better in a room, which is a legitimate reason to book the classroom course

Live online is not e-learning

These get confused when people compare prices. Live online instructor-led is a real tutor teaching a real group at a set time, and it costs more than self-paced study for that reason. E-learning is pre-recorded material you work through alone whenever you like. Both lead to the same IOSH certificate, but if you book the cheaper one expecting a tutor, you will be disappointed. Check which you are looking at before comparing on price alone.

Common questions

Is the certificate different from the classroom course?

No. Classroom, live online and e-learning all lead to the same IOSH Managing Safely certificate, and the delivery format is not recorded on it. An employer or client checking your training record sees an IOSH certificate, verifiable online, either way.

What do I need to take part?

A reliable connection, a laptop or desktop with a working camera and microphone, and somewhere quiet enough to concentrate for a full day. Tablets and phones are usually workable for viewing but awkward for the group exercises. Providers send joining instructions with the platform details in advance.

Do I still have to do the practical risk assessment?

Yes. It is the same two-part assessment whichever format you choose. You carry out a risk assessment on your own workplace using a template provided and submit it within two weeks of finishing the taught content.

Can the three days be split up?

Some providers run consecutive days and others split the sessions across weeks to make them easier to fit around work. Dates are shown on each listing below, so check the pattern before booking if that matters to you.
