Construction & Engineering Courses

Most UK sites require a valid CSCS card, and which card you can hold depends on the combination of safety training and recognised qualification behind it — so the place to start is your role rather than a subject. Operatives take CITB Health & Safety Awareness, supervisors take SSSTS, and site managers take SMSTS. Blue, gold and black cards additionally need a Construction NVQ, which evidences competence through workplace assessment rather than a course. Plant and access operators need card-based training tied to the specific machine.

Engineering construction works to a different scheme again. On power stations, refineries, chemical and process plant, site access usually depends on the CCNSG Safety Passport rather than a CSCS card, alongside the wider range of ECITB training courses. The two schemes are separate, so anyone moving between building sites and engineering construction generally carries both.

Where to Start by Role

Operatives and new entrants

Start with CITB Health & Safety Awareness, the one-day course underpinning most green card applications.

Add hazard-specific training for the work you actually do — asbestos awareness, manual handling and working at height are the most commonly required.

Supervisors and gangers

SSSTS is the recognised step up for anyone taking responsibility for others on site, renewed every five years with the one-day refresher.

IOSH Working Safely suits supervisors working outside the CITB scheme, or alongside it in mixed-sector businesses.

Site managers and agents

SMSTS is the standard for site managers, agents and project managers, again on a five-year cycle. The refresher is only available before expiry — let it lapse and it is the full five days again.

IOSH Managing Safely and NEBOSH suit those building a health and safety career rather than managing a site.

Plant and access operators

Card-based training tied to the specific machine: CPCS and NPORS for plant, IPAF for powered access, PASMA for mobile towers, and forklift and telehandler categories.

Cards are category-specific. Holding one machine category does not authorise another, so check the category codes against the plant you actually operate.

Engineering construction

The CCNSG Safety Passport is required for access to most engineering construction and process industry sites — refineries, power stations, chemical plants.

It is a separate scheme from CITB Site Safety Plus. Holding SMSTS or SSSTS does not cover it, and a surprising number of people find that out at the gate.

Competence is evidenced separately too. ECITB qualifications are the engineering construction equivalent of a Construction NVQ.

Evidencing competence

Training demonstrates knowledge. Construction NVQs evidence competence through assessment of your actual work, and are what most blue, gold and black CSCS cards require.

Levels run from 2 for operatives through to 6 and 7 for senior managers. There is no exam — you build a portfolio while doing the job.

CSCS Cards Explained

A CSCS card is not a training certificate. It is proof of occupational competence, and each card has its own combination of requirements. The pattern is broadly this:

Card	Typically for	Usually requires
Green (Labourer)	Site labourers and new entrants	A recognised H&S course such as CITB HSA, plus the CITB test
Blue (Skilled Worker)	Trade operatives	A Level 2 NVQ in the relevant trade, plus the CITB test
Gold (Advanced / Supervisor)	Advanced craft and supervisors	A Level 3 NVQ, plus the CITB test. Supervisors normally also hold SSSTS
Black (Manager)	Site managers and agents	A Level 6 or 7 NVQ, plus the managerial CITB test. Managers normally also hold SMSTS

Every route needs a current CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at the right level. Card requirements are set by CSCS and change from time to time, so confirm the current criteria with them before booking training on that basis.

Training by Subject Area

Health, safety and compliance

The statutory schemes — CITB Site Safety Plus, IOSH and NEBOSH — plus the hazard-specific training your risk assessments call for.

Common requirements include working at height, confined spaces, asbestos awareness and manual handling.

Plant, equipment and machinery

Safe selection, operation and inspection of plant and access equipment: CPCS, NPORS, forklift and telehandler, PASMA, IPAF, harness use and welding and fabrication.

Most of these carry expiry dates of their own, typically three to five years, and renewals are usually shorter than the initial course if taken in time.

Site management and planning

Beyond SMSTS, the roles that carry specific statutory duties: Temporary Works Coordinator and Temporary Works Supervisor, CDM Regulations and CITB SEATS.

Temporary works in particular is where duties are often assumed rather than assigned. The role has to be appointed in writing.

NVQ qualifications

Construction NVQs from Level 2 through Level 7 are work-based and assessed on site rather than by examination, which makes them suitable for experienced people with no formal qualification.

Timescales depend on how quickly you gather evidence and how often the assessor visits, so plan around months rather than weeks if a card deadline is involved.

ECITB and engineering construction

ECITB training courses serve power generation, oil and gas, chemicals, nuclear and process plant. Site access runs on the CCNSG Safety Passport, a two-day course with a card valid for three years, renewed by a one-day course before it expires.

Supervisors add Leading a Team Safely on top of the passport. Trades evidence competence through ECITB diplomas in erecting steelwork, erecting and rigging, assessed in the workplace with no exam.

Common Questions

Does SMSTS or SSSTS get me a CSCS card?

Not on its own. A Gold or Black card normally requires an NVQ at the relevant level plus a current CITB Health, Safety and Environment test. SMSTS and SSSTS are usually expected alongside those, but they are not a substitute for the qualification.

What is the difference between CPCS and NPORS?

Both are plant operator card schemes covering similar machine categories. CPCS is administered by NOCN and is more commonly specified on larger sites; NPORS is often more flexible on delivery and assessment. Which you need depends on what the site or employer accepts, so check before booking.

Do I need CCNSG as well as SMSTS?

If you are going onto an engineering construction or process industry site, almost certainly yes. CCNSG is a separate safety passport scheme and CITB qualifications do not cover it. The two are not interchangeable in either direction — browse all ECITB training courses if that is the sector you work in.

How long does a Construction NVQ take?

It depends on you rather than a timetable. Assessment is based on evidence from your actual work, so the pace is set by how quickly you gather it and how often your assessor can visit. Several months is typical; if a card renewal deadline is driving it, start early.

Can construction safety training be done online?

Much of it can. SMSTS, SSSTS and most awareness courses are available as live online instructor-led sessions carrying the same certificate. Anything with a practical assessment — plant operation, IPAF, PASMA, harness use — requires hands-on attendance.

Which training do I need for temporary works?

It follows the appointment. Temporary Works Supervisor for those supervising the works on site, Temporary Works Coordinator for the person coordinating the process. Both roles should be formally appointed in writing rather than assumed by whoever is available.
