Site Management Training Courses

Site management training splits into two things that are easily confused. There are the short safety certificates that let you run a site legally and satisfy a principal contractor, and there are the vocational qualifications that prove your competence as a construction manager and unlock the CSCS card that goes with it. Most site managers end up needing both, and they are not interchangeable.

Two routesCertificate and NVQShort safety certificates and vocational qualifications do different jobs
Site Safety Plus2 to 5 daysTime-limited certificates, renewed by a refresher before they expire
NVQ Level 6 and 7Portfolio-basedAssessed on the work you already do. No exam and no expiry date
CSCS Manager cardNeeds an NVQA safety certificate on its own will not get you one

Which route do you actually need?

Go for a certificate if

  • A contractor, client or framework has named one specifically. If the tender says SMSTS, an NVQ will not satisfy it
  • You are stepping into a site manager or supervisor role and need to be compliant quickly
  • Your existing certificate is approaching its expiry date and needs renewing
  • You need proof of health and safety training rather than proof of occupational competence

Go for an NVQ if

  • You need a CSCS Manager card, which requires a vocational qualification at Level 6 or 7
  • You are already doing the job and want the qualification that recognises it
  • You would rather be assessed on real site work than sit an examination
  • You are working towards chartered status or a senior management position

Courses and qualifications on this page

The certificates are set by the CITB Site Safety Plus scheme, so the syllabus is identical whichever approved provider you book with. What differs is the venue, the format and the price, which is what this page lets you compare.

  • SMSTS — five days, the management-level safety certificate, valid five years
  • SMSTS Refresher — two days, renews an SMSTS before it lapses
  • NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Construction Site Management — the standard site manager qualification
  • NVQ Level 7 Diploma in Construction Senior Management — for contracts managers and above
  • NPORS Construction Site Manager — an alternative site management card scheme
  • NPORS Construction Site Manager Refresher — renews an existing NPORS card
  • All construction NVQs — the full range across trades and management levels

Site management sits in the middle of the CITB Site Safety Plus ladder. A step below, SSSTS covers supervisors responsible for a team rather than a whole site. A step above, Director's Role for Health and Safety deals with the duties that sit with the board.

Who these courses are for

Site managers, site agents and project managers already in post. Supervisors and gangers stepping up to management for the first time. Contracts managers and senior staff carrying responsibility across several sites. And anyone whose employer or client has named a specific certificate as a condition of working.

There are no formal entry requirements for the Site Safety Plus certificates, so you can book one directly. NVQs work differently: because they are assessed on real work, you need to be in a role that actually generates the evidence.

Check before your certificate lapses

Refreshers have to be completed while the certificate is still valid. Once it expires the refresher route closes and the full course must be repeated, which under the CITB scheme rules is not subject to appeal. Check your expiry date, and if you are not sure which course your role calls for, the free Site Safety Plus course finder works it out in a couple of questions.

How you can study

Classroom

Still the most widely available format for the CITB certificates, delivered at a training centre over consecutive days. Venues are listed by town and county below.

Live online

Tutor-led sessions in a virtual classroom, leading to exactly the same certificate. Not self-paced e-learning: sessions run to a timetable and the examination is invigilated.

Day release

The same course spread across separate weeks rather than a solid block. Useful when you cannot lose a full week from site, though it takes longer to finish.

On site for groups

Delivered at your own premises where you have enough delegates, which removes travel and keeps the team together. Worth pricing up from four people upwards.

Common questions

Is SMSTS a qualification?

Not in the vocational sense. SMSTS is a certificate of training and assessment under the CITB Site Safety Plus scheme, valid for five years and renewed by a refresher. An NVQ is a vocational qualification with no expiry date. Contractors generally ask for the certificate; CSCS asks for the qualification.

Do I need an NVQ to be a site manager?

Not legally, but in practice most principal contractors require a CSCS card to be on site, and the Manager card needs a Level 6 or 7 vocational qualification behind it along with a current Health, Safety and Environment test pass. If you are working for a main contractor or on a framework, you will very likely need one eventually.

How long does an NVQ Level 6 take?

It varies, because it is portfolio-based rather than taught. Twelve to eighteen months is typical, but the real determinant is how quickly you can gather evidence from your day-to-day work and how often you meet your assessor. There is no fixed end date.

What is the difference between SSSTS and SMSTS?

SSSTS is two days and aimed at supervisors responsible for a team. SMSTS is five days and aimed at managers responsible for a site. SSSTS is not a prerequisite, though CITB recommends it for anyone without previous health and safety management experience. CITB also accepts an SMSTS certificate in place of SSSTS and Health and Safety Awareness.

Can I do site management training online?

Yes for the CITB certificates, which run as live tutor-led courses leading to the same certificate as classroom delivery. You will need a private room, a webcam and a stable connection throughout. NVQs are largely remote by nature, with evidence submitted and reviewed digitally and assessor contact arranged around your work.

Which comes first, the certificate or the NVQ?

Usually the certificate. It is faster, it is what gets named in contracts, and it is often needed before you can take the role on. The NVQ then follows once you are doing the job, because it is assessed on the work itself. There is no rule requiring one before the other.
