Asbestos Awareness & Management
Asbestos training courses are essential for anyone working in industries where exposure to asbestos is a risk — including construction, renovation, demolition, and facilities management. Asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) are commonly found in buildings constructed or refurbished before 2000 and remain a leading cause of occupational cancer in the UK.
Asbestos-Containing Materials (ACMs)
ACMs include insulation boards, ceiling tiles, pipe lagging, textured coatings such as Artex, and cement products. While often safe when undisturbed, ACMs become extremely hazardous if damaged or deteriorated — releasing asbestos fibres into the air that can be inhaled, causing asbestosis, mesothelioma, and lung cancer. Identifying and managing ACMs is a legal requirement under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.
Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012
These regulations place legal duties on employers, building owners, and duty holders to prevent exposure to asbestos fibres. Duty holders must identify and assess ACMs, maintain an up-to-date asbestos register, develop an asbestos management plan, and ensure that anyone who could disturb ACMs receives proper asbestos awareness training.
The Duty to Manage Asbestos
Regulation 4 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 requires those who manage non-domestic premises to carry out asbestos surveys, keep records, develop a management plan, and communicate risks clearly to workers and contractors.
Regulation 10 also requires refresher training at suitable intervals, which in practice means annually for asbestos awareness. Check when your asbestos awareness refresher is due with our free certificate expiry checker.
Our asbestos training spans every level and accreditation. For awareness see Asbestos Awareness (also available UKATA-accredited and IATP-accredited); for those who disturb ACMs, Non-Licensed Asbestos Works and its refresher; for duty holders, Duty to Manage Asbestos; and for removal, Asbestos Removal. Professional survey and management qualifications include BOHS P402 surveying and BOHS P405 management. Browse all UKATA courses or Asbestos Risk Assessment training.
